Monday 16th February - I do love a

great flashmob;

Waltz no 2, Shostakovitch

I've never had the luck to experience a flash mob... one day, some day...

Meanwhile we're half way through February, it's been sunny all day, and we're set for over 8 hours of daylight now.

I've been designing my 'cooking area' this morning before we start creating next level plans with the architect overseeing the whole project.

My cousin's dishwasher is actually two pullout drawers under her draining board - wowsers!

You can get them with just the top drawer or with two drawers.

If you have two drawers they can be operated separately. So we'd fill the top drawer with a small load, no more stooping down to stack and empty the bottom rack. But there's always a cost... mega ££££. One can dream.

(My elderly neighbour tripped over the open door of her dishwasher, gashed her leg and

scroll quickly away now if you are of a sensitive nature

and there was blood everywhere. So I'm always careful how I move around ours when it's open.)

On a more cheerful note;

Einsame Blumen, Schumacher op 82, played by Mitsuko Ochida.

Apropos of nothing at all, my mother always wore 'Mitsuko' perfume...

  1. Ouch, I can see how that accident can happen .
I had to go off and look at dishwashers - who knew there were so many different sizes. I'm a newby to owning one and had no idea.

    1. My parents were early adopters... we had a dishwasher in the mid 60s, I reckon.

  2. That Shostakovich was awesome. I'm always envious of those caught in a flash mob - I can't imagine how it would feel.

  3. When we were doing all the customization of our new house being built we kept one thing in mind. When looking at the price of an option consider how much it will affect you in daily life. In our case we decided that although the LeMans corner pull-out was a rip-off price (about 5 times the price of the IKEA equivalent) it wasn’t something we could put in later and it would irritate us on a daily basis so was worth the money to avoid the later frustration. Other items that were cheaper were rejected because they could be done later if we changed our minds or would be of minimal benefit so weren’t worth the money. Everyone makes their own assessments of what something is worth to them so you can ignore other people’s “must haves” and “why on earth would you spend so much money on thats”.

    1. Some really good points there, Lynda. I like hearing what other people's 'must haves' are as it adds to the information gathering phase. And 'cost-benefit' thinking is well worth it. Thanks

    2. I think Lynda is right. It is such a personal thing, and worth spending time planning. With kitchens as with everything else, there's no point in judging someone else's decision, as their lifestyle is not yours. But it IS helpful to listen and sometimes you pick up good tips along the way.

  4. Loved the flash mob! I've never seen one either.
I have a slimline dishwasher as the kitchen isnt huge. I researched various makes and bought the best one I could afford, particularly looking at noise levels.

  5. OH Your poor old neighbour. Unfortunately that is the kind of accident that might befall me as I trip on and run into all kinds of obstacles :)
I'd love to be somewhere when a flash mob was happening.

A flash mob is such fun!

  7. I don't know what your tolerance for disorder/chaos is but I discovered during the installation of my kitchen that mine is much lower than I thought. Living in a flat there was no way to avoid the builders, not even my bedroom because the fuse-box - or whatever replaced fuses - is in there, neatly hidden. If I had had the luxury of an 'upstairs' I would have set up an escape room : kettle, snacks maybe even a microwave not to mention books, laptop and cosy blanket because builders love opening all the windows. They did a fabulous job but they did feel like an invading army.

    1. I think we will set up an escape room; there's room for q few kitcheny bits in the bedroom upstairs. We're having a the kitchen built in the extension before the old one is turned into utility area and shower room which might help with chaos! Stuff will stay in old kitchen and then get moved into new space/ removed from the house. At least that's the plan....

    2. Sounds like a plan.

  8. I would love to see a flash mob in the flesh - they look so joyous.
I'm very aware of trip hazards in the house - most of them have four legs!

    1. We used to have 2 cats... it's like having toddlers, you develop a sort of sliding way of walking around to avoid paws and fingers!

  9. Hundreds of decisions need to be made for a new cooking room.
What do you like about your current area?
    What don't you like?
Is this a one cook place, or will others be working at the same time?
Having a vision statement can help.
It's not always about what things or colours to have, but more about how the room should feel to you. Should the room be cheery? Full of light? Functional? Elegant? Modern? Rustic? etc.
When I had to make a decision between two equally good things, which one supported my vision? Otherwise, I could end up with lots of things I really liked, but didn't always play well with one another.
And then, if you can collect samples, put them together so you can see whether you like how they look together and if they support your vision.
Paint colour is the last thing to be chosen, because it can be any color.
It helps if one thing is the 'star' and others are the supporting cast.
Too may 'must haves' sometimes means nothing is important.

  10. Flash mob videos always make my eyes prick with tears. There's something about everyone joining in to create beautiful music to delight the unsuspecting crowds.
We finished our kitchen renovation a couple of years ago and discussed it for many months beforehand. Functionality is important, and lighting!

    1. Lighting! I have been working in my own shadow for over 40 years because of light coming from one central fitment. At last! At last!
