Monday 30th March - what has happened to Hot Cross Buns?

 I was looking to add hot cross buns to my ocado order; these are the varieties that came up;

Red Velvet, Luxury Fruited, Tiramisu, Extremely Lemony Curd Filled, Granny Smith Apple, Extremely Cheesy, Extremely Chocolatey,

I'm pretty sure BB came home with a Millionaire caramel chocolate and fudge version a week or so ago. I tried one, against my better judgement, and left the rest for him! I bought some Luxury Fruited hot cross buns last week, toooooo sweet for my taste.

So I was amused to hear this raised as a topic in the latest episode of the radio programme 'The Kitchen Cabinet' (available on BBCsounds). The panel were unanimous in their outrage at all these flavoured breads masquerading as hot cross buns s. I'm with them every step of the way.

I've ordered ocado hot cross buns with no fancy description on the packet, and as a backup some Fruited tea cakes. The latter are excellent toasted and turned into cheese sandwiches cheddar for BB, brie for me.

And please, please save me from salted caramel in my chocolate Easter Egg!

Time for some calm...

Ascanoi Trombetti (1544 - 1590) Diliguam te Domine, performed by the Royal Wind Music

    1. Aren't they wonderful! One of the church music group is a professional recorder player and teacher and it's always special when she plays. I used to tech recorders at primary school and got a wonderful group of players going, on descent, alto and tenor recorders.

    1. Best NOT to choose and to go for the traditional ones! No good ever came of a red velvet hot cross bun!

I couldn't help wondering how you would get the biggest one home on the bus? Or even on a bike? Funny how the mind works. As for the music? It was like one long gentle caress. Thank you.

    3. I have a feeling they come apart in sections (unlike pianos, harpsichord and double basses, although, I have a faint memory of a folding double bass somewhere)

  5. What a beautiful and reverent piece of music. Such a calm blessing at the end of my day.
I've never had a hot cross bun but if I wanted one I'd probably find a recipe and try making my own ( with reduced sugar).

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the music. If you are good at making bread then homemade hot cross buns might be best!

    2. Delia Smith has a recipe for making the dough in a bread machine. You then shape them, give them a second rise, and bake them. They pass muster with my husband who grew up with the ones from his cousin’s bakery. He’s very fussy about hot cross buns and has found only one bakery over here that “makes them right”. Most don’t have enough spices.

  6. I think I am very lucky when it comes to Hot Cross Buns. My cousin bakes them every Good Friday morning and I go there for breakfast.

  7. I've held out against trying any of the weird and wonderful - they just sound so wrong and some of those M&S ones shouldn't be allowed!

  8. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" as an old boss of mine used to frequently say.

  9. I just want an old fashioned hot cross bun. Our local baker still makes lovely ones and only a couple of weeks before Good Friday too. I agree with Tracy. Regards Sue H

    1. All of the comments make me wonder who is buying red velvet or tiramisu hot cross buns?! And do they buy them a second time?

  12. I love traditional, but I'd try any of them! They aren't really a thing here and I miss them. I should make them but it's been years lol
