This was one of my favourite books;
When I was little, Parties had already begun to change. Girls had party dresses, but I'm not sure the boys wore ties.
We did play all the party games; oranges and lemons, blind man's buff, and hunt the thimble;
It took me a surprisingly long time to spot the thimble in the picture.
......
So what's this bit of nostalgia all about? Well, it's becoming a bit of a habit; BB unpacks the grocery delivery, comes back into the sitting room and then suddenly stops an announces 'I've lost my wedding ring again'.
After an anxious half hour we found it in the vegetable drawer in the fridge. His ring seems to have developed a bit of an affinity for potatoes.
.....
And breathe.

I'm glad his wedding ring gets found. Such a small item can easily get misplaced. For me it's my phone. I'm forever misplacing it :(
ReplyDeleteIt's usually his glasses that disappear; they are in a shiny black case exactly matching the top of the computer printer... (Now how would I know that, I wonder? 🤔
DeleteI did so love those books! I think that's how I learned to read lol.
ReplyDeletePoor husband. I'm glad you found it.
The Ladybird 'learn to read' were so much better than boring old Peter and Jane! And such lively illustrations too.
DeleteHe really needs to invest a few quid in a ring reducer!
ReplyDeleteAm sending him off to the jewellers today... I can't handle the excitement of any more unscheduled search and rescue missions among the potatoes and carrots!
DeleteI once dropped/lost all three rings I was wearing in the recycling bin. It was a very cold day. Had to tip out a small mountain of paper/card/tins etc to find them. Good job it wasn't the kitchen/garden waste bin.
ReplyDeleteOh no! But as you say, could have been So Much Worse.. 😯
DeleteI lost my engagement ring, we took the kitchen apart, no signs of it, I was devastated, popped the plug into the sink to wash my hands, and there it was, under the kitchen sink plug. I still have one Ladybird book from my childhood A Christmas customs.
ReplyDeleteIt's most mysterious, where things hide...
DeleteI do like Ladybird books!
ReplyDeleteMe too, but the 'new' ones feel like they have lost something in the modernisation process.
DeleteWhat luck that you found his ring! We play that game here too, usually for phones.
ReplyDeleteThere are things that definitely elusive; car keys, phones, glasses
DeleteNostalgic illustrations. Not such nostalgic 'Hunt the ring', though.
ReplyDeleteI taught the granddaughter of the illustrator of the Peter and Jane books.
It's amazing whose children you encounter as a teacher... I was totally taken aback to discover a pop star father at my class djembe performance!
DeleteEmbarrassingly, I have reached the point where I actually can't find my glasses when they are on my head. I never thought that would be a real thing!
ReplyDeleteOh joy, I no longer feel so al9he; I frequently touch the bridge of my nose to check my glasses are where I left them; on my face. This is in spite of the fact I put them on as soon as I wake up and try to remember to take them off before I switch off the bedside light...
DeleteI remember childhood birthday parties with great fondness. Egg sandwiches, chocolate cake and iced biscuits, pop from the pop man who delivered once a week, cotton frocks and white ankle socks. So unsophisticated and simple. Those were the days!
ReplyDeleteThe height of sophistication was when we hosted a joint birthday party with a couple of other children (same crowd of party guests as we were all at the same schools) and we had A MAGICIAN! He magicked sweets from toothpaste and paper and all sorts of stuff, even had a Real Rabbit!
