Monday 19th October - rather a lot of cake

That chocolate cake was sooo good; shame it was such a little one.

I'll have to make another tomorrow. I've got plenty of eggs after the delivery yesterday, plus the single egg left over from last time.

This week I forgot to include breakfast cereal and potatoes in the order. There's always something.

I have made dahl! First time ever.

I picked a 'dump and go' slowcooker recipe from tamingtwins.com. I've got a very small slowcooker, so by the time I had added the chopped onion, tin of chopped tomatoes and tin of coconut milk to the pot it was nearly brim full. There was just room for the lentils but I left out the butternut squash. (I didn't have any, I was thinking of substituting celeriac).

The result is delicious, in spite of using dried ground ginger and garlic granules instead of fresh. I left it cooking for an extra hour by mistake so I'll add a little more stock as it is rather thick.

It's going to make an excellent soup too.

  1. Thanks for drawing this one to my attention, and for reminding me of taming twins.com. I've used her slow cooker recipes before. Somewhere she has a note on her cooker size, and somewhere I have a note about how much I need to reduce her recipes to fit our very small model.

    1. I've written out her recipe, and I'll try and remember to add a reminder to make half the quantity next time!

  2. I have three slo cookers- the original from when I was just feeding the two of us in the 80s, a middlesized one, from when the family were at home, and a HUGE one, bought for church catering purposes. I may use the latter for this recipe, as I have a squash currently loitering in the fridge...

    1. I have filled 3x 470ml containers, and 4x single serve yoghurt pot sized containers from this quality without the added squash! Good job it says you can freeze it for 3 months!

  3. Very nice! We like dhal and have it a lot, courtesy of the chef in the kitchen (not me!) The cakes sound very tasty, too.

  4. I'm not familiar with dhal but it looks like it might be tasty. I wonder if DH would eat it though. I don't have a slow cooker but surely a casserole in an oven at low heat would work.
