Saturday 28th September

Autumn is here! I'm wearing slippers! I was very glad I took these to the holiday cottage; the floors there were all yellow bricks.

You can see the brick floor in the kitchen. Isn't it lovely that they left the old coal fired range, not all that different to the one used every day in the house where BB grew up. Luckily we were provided with an electric cooker, fridge and microwave.

I was reading the latest newsletter written by Austin Kleon, an artist and writer in California, this time on the subject of Autumn;

He has a quotation from Thoreau; "Live in each season as it passes"

And also this, written by Kurt Vonnegut;

Admitted he lives somewhere in the States rather than England. It's still an interesting thought.

Wednesday this week was the middle day of our holiday. In the morning we went out in between the showers for a wander upstream (I think).

A touch of colour; I think is a mallow flower

After lunch the sun came out and we walked beside the river in the other direction

For a little wile it was really lovely outside. We were walking along the top of the bank between the river and the field stretching to the edge of the world.

  1. Vonnegut says some sensible things! I like the thought of Locking and Unlocking. What a lovely area you were in, and with a bit of sunshine too.

    1. My mother, who grew up in The Netherlands, felt it was like a homecoming to visit the fen country because of the skies.

  3. I agree about the locking and unlocking. Mind you, it hasn't felt much like autumn lately, just blooming cold!

  4. I like your slippers Kirsten, May I ask did you make up the pattern or is it a downloadable one? I have a few skeins of home spun pure wool from my novice spinning days so it’s nubbly but useable and when washed and agitated in hot water it felts beautifully and I would love to find a slip on or mule slipper pattern to knit. Warm jumpers and slippers are essential when staying in Landmark Trust properties unless like us you experience a 30 degree heatwave as we did last September whilst staying in Sanders on Dartmoor. We sat in deckchairs in the garden with our feet dabbling in the running stream. There was also a bungalow Belle stove in the kitchen - for decorative purposes only I’m pleased to say! We find when we stay in Landmarks we are more than content to enjoy the house and its history and potter around the local area on foot while trying to read as many books as possible from the well-chosen bookshelves. No TV or wifi makes that possible thankfully. Sarah

    1. Here's the pattern; https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/non-felted-slippers
      It's a bit odd; the cast on row looks unlikely because it is twice the length of your foot. At the end you sew a flat seam from toe, under the centre of the sole, to the back of the cuff. Otherwise not too tricky. I've made 4 pairs in total so far for me and friends.
