Monday 22nd December - Clearing the decks

The boxes of Christmas decorations have been taken back upstairs, and what hasn't been done won't be done now. Today's main efforts were stringing all the cards around the room at ceiling height,

and hanging baubles on the rose bush outside. (Picture tomorrow). Not much left to do - the last presents to wrap and deliver to local friends and, oh, yes, the other half of the dining room table...

I would very much like to get this sorted in time for Christmas...  we've kind of ignored it for about a year. I'm sure it is full of forgotten treasures though, so could be quite fun (typing in the text doesn't quite convey my dubious tone of voice).

Meanwhile here is the last of the Advent O antiphons, the one for 23rd December. I suppose the night-time services on Christmas Eve were considered to be part of Christmas, rather in the way the Midnight Communion service on Christmas Eve was always a part of Christmas Day, more important in some ways that the Christmas Day service.

O Emmanuel,

Rex et legifer noster,

expectatio Gentium,et Salvator earum:

veni ad savandum nos, Domine, Deus noster.

O Emmanuel,

our king and our lawgiver,

the hope of the nations and their Saviour:

Come and save us, O Lord our God.

The text of these antiphons is very familiar to us from the Advent hymn 'O Come, O Come Emmanuel' .

Here are Chet Valley Churches singing it;

  1. I love those antiphons. And seeing plainsong again, so nice. We sang a lot of plainsong at my school.

    1. I never sang plainsong; at an English Anglican boarding school we learned to chant psalms... very satisfying.

    1. The smaller the tree, the quicker it is to decorate! It still took three days... a little bit here, a little bit there...

  3. I would put all that stuff from the table into the big laundry basket and put it on the spare bed. Then gradually empty its contents into their proper place. It gets done fairly quickly because I will need the basket for washing, and the soare bed for visitors. But it does leave a lovely clear table

  4. Your house sounds like our house. I've just cleared a whole lot of 'stuff' into a laundry basket, which will have to go 'somewhere.' The space created has been filled with other 'stuff.' I keep running out of laundry baskets!!

    1. No, there it is! I try not to buy more baskets as I know all too well what will happen.

  6. My mother worked until noon on December 24th, and then Christmas began… The Christmas tree was decorated, and when it got dark between 5 and 6 pm, the Christ Child came… well, Santa Claus… Warmest regards and Merry Christmas from Viola

P.S. We have it better today, much more free time than in the days of our mothers and grandmothers :-)))

    1. Yes, housework is easier and employment hours are not as long.

And we can buy so much more Christmas food in the shops too...

      Have a lovely Christmas

  8. My dining room table (AND SPARE ROOM!) are an utter disaster! My husband is despairing of me and I really need to clear them!!!! Too much school stuff and clothes I need to sell (Vintage clothes won't sell in my local charity shops!). Your tree looks gorgeous! I am so happy we bought our tree in and finally dressed it, albeit sparsely! I do wish we had string up for the cards. We just precariously balance them all over the top of the piano!!!
