Tuesday 13th January - nothing venture, nothing gain?

This article from The Spruce appeared in my newsfeed just now, with instructions on how to persuade your amaryllis to flower for a second year. I need to re-read it to make sure I know what to do, although it seems quite simple.

Our first amaryllis is almost over, so I I'll give this a go.

Meanwhile the second bulb has produced a stem and bud to go with the two leaves.

I'd like to see if there are any leftover bulbs in the garden centre; perhaps we'll get there later this week.

Here's a little warmth for you, 'Am Kamin' or 'By the Fireside' from 'Kinderscenen' by Schumman

It's astonishing how differently people play this; either at this gentle, reflective speed, or else at what seems like a flat-out romp.

    1. I usually ignore it, leave it in its pot and water it occasionally. I'm surprised it keeps going! I have successfully rooted a few leaves in a pot and over the course of the year they became a plant and flowered, much to my surprise. Granny Marigold is the one who really knows. Try searching her blog!

  2. Good luck with the amaryllis. I once managed to keep one to flower the next year. Regarding Christmas cactus I have several all from where I have accidentally knocked pieces off and then after putting them in a new pot of compost they have turned into new flowering plants. I now give them away! One piece fell off into an orchid in a pot next next to it and it has rooted and turned into a successful plant so now I have a flowering orchid and a flourishing Christmas cactus. I do not have green fingers this is all just luck. Regards Sue H

    1. Granny Marigold pruned hers and rooted the prunings! But she must have green fingers from all the beautiful photographs of her garden and plants

  3. I'm not sure about the green fingers but I find that The Spruce has very good information and often visit that site. I've had good luck getting Amaryllis to bloom by putting them on the porch with a south exposure for the summer. I quit watering in August and by October they are usually dormant. I stick them in a cool dark place and eventually take one or two out, water them and wait for them to wake up. I've never had one show new growth without my watering. Not sure if I don't wait long enough or what. I did find a site where this man never did anything other than water his all year around and he had blooms. I tried that but I had poor results and will go back to the previous method. By now you're sorry you mentioned Amaryllis because I do go on and on lol.
BTW, I think it's great that you're keeping up with the leg exercises in spite of the spaghetti effects.

    1. Thank you for the instructions, I'll follow them this year - although maybe not go as far as building a south-facing porch to keep the pots in through the summer!
