Wednesday 18th February

The oak tree at the bottom of the garden

Yesterday was bright and sunny, appropriate for Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnival day. Also good, because it was dry, and not too cold.

Today is a complete change, cold, grey and raining. Very suitable for Ash Wednesday!

For Lent, I've decided to follow 'The Jesus Trail' on the Conqueror virtual walking app. It's a 39 mile route around the places Jesus would have known, although 2000 years have changed most of them beyond recognition, thinking about it!

This is the church of the Annunciation in Nazareth where the Angel came to Mary with the message that she was going to bear a son... how hot and sunny it looks! This is where the route begins... this church was built much later, of course.

....

I succumbed and sent off for this stitchbook, sold by hobbyart.uk

It's been appearing on my newsfeed for ages. I watched the price come down, and eventually I chose the small book. It's a dinky little thing and I wanted to love it. Each page is set up to be stitched as a sampler of all kinds of embroidery stitches, something to go into an 'analogue bag' along with some needles, thread and thread cutter.

BUT, and it's a huge issue, every page, every single page, is solid with spelling mistakes. What is going on? How could this happen? So, sadly, I'm going to request a refund.

Ah well. I did consider trying to make my own version, but I think I really don't want to invest that much time and effort.

Some reflective music for Ash Wednesday... Andras Schiff playing the slow movement from the Italian Concerto by JSBach.

  1. I bought one of those stitch books too. I thought I’d take a look at it and if I liked it I’d get one for you. I haven’t opened it yet so I guess I should before it’s too late to return it.

    1. I have two days to return it so all is good. Weird that no one has mentioned the spelling mistakes in the reviews. I expected the threads to be poor quality but I have plenty of embroidery floss so that wasn’t a deterrent.

    2. Is yours suffering from the same overwhhelm of spelling mistakes? They missed so many letters from the middle of the word buttonhole thar it was RUDE!

    3. The ones I noticed were butterhole instead of buttonhole. I bought the “updated 2026” edition so maybe they tried to correct it but still didn’t have anyone who knew the correct words. I bought mine from Amazon and it was available from several sellers - all Chinese. I got the one that was shipped by Amazon to avoid problems with returns and also to get faster delivery - the ones shipping from China take weeks to arrive.

    4. Good luck... I (foolishly?) bought mine from the website 😔

  2. I think its been 'edited' by a foreign person, or was originally in another language maybe?

    1. I think that's what's happened, unfortunately.

  3. So sorry to hear about the stitch book. Publishing is easy. There are so many ways to upload books without oversight. If I upload a book to Amazon, Draft2Digital or any of the other platforms, I know that no-one will check. And if, like me, you're trying to do it at minimal cost, paying out hundreds of pounds for an editor isn't always possible. Personally, I feel that someone sending out a book should at least try to get things properly laid out, otherwise it's an insult to a reader. Google Translate - which is free - would do a good enough job. Hugs as it looks like it would have been amazing if someone had taken a tiny bit more care. How disappointing!
That walk sounds inspiring. I hope that you enjoy the virtual tour.
    You find the best music!

    1. I did feel 'had' by the vendor. Now to pursue them for a refund...

  4. What a shame the little book is such a disaster. It has some lovely ideas in it, by the look of it.
Your walk looks so interesting and informative.

    1. You've reminded me to enter yesterday's step count (I'm always a day behind). I wonder where I'll end up.

  5. I keep looking at the Conqueror virtual walking app. but can't commit, is it easy to do. I have visited Israel, it was an amazing experience. I loved it.

    1. It's they only way I can make myself clock up at least 2000 steps each day.
It took me a while to get the hang of it. I enter my steps manually each day as I haven't connected my garmin to the app.
They have videos on YouTube; some say it's a scam, but I thibk that's because it's quite expensive, especially if you pick a short trail, and some routes are really boring! The Dutch bulb fields was very dull, for example, but Santiago di compostella was more interesting.

  6. What a good idea - to do something instead of give something up.
I love that little stitchbook - if it wasn't for all the mistakes. I've been wanting to find something like that so I could maybe learn some stitches. Unfortunately, all the ones I see are made in China or such and I'm afraid I'd have the same issue as you are having.
    Love your tree drawing!

    1. I'm going to make a blog post of what I learned from the stitch book experience!
Thank you for the encouragement about the tree drawing.

  7. Great idea to challenge yourself to virtually walk those 39 miles where Jesus walked. Disappointing about the spelling mistakes in your little book :(

    1. I was properly disappointed when I discovered the book was so bad, I have to admit. 'Live and learn' seems to be what this year's Lent season is all about! The book was much reduced from the original advertised price; I thought I had been so clever to wait, but maybe that was a hint....?
