Monday 15th June - where's the cat?

He stayed hidden in the weeds all the time we were out on the patio with BB's proper tape measure, my sewing yardstick/metre ruleyard, spare bricks for marking out edges and pavements chalk.

We were trying to fathom out how to arrange the steps down from what will be the new patio, without encroaching on the garden. Tricky, as the patio is only 2m deep from house to garden, and because of the slope of the ground the garden edge of the patio will be about 45 cm above ground level.

Chalking the lines makes everything so much easier! That pillar of bricks, 45cm tall, marks the height of the floor of the extension.

This sketch is just part of the patio area. We worked out that if we have a drop from the extension doors to the patio of around 10 cm - a shallow step - we can do three steps in an L-shape, each having a rise (or drop - depends which way you are going!) of around 12 or 13 cm.

Aki the cat put up with all this happening around him... perhaps he was muttering 'there is no cat' and hoping we hadn't seen him.

There's a rumour that work might start soon... I'm not holding my breath...

...

It's been a bit tough this week but I have persuaded, pushed, cajoled and bribed myself to get 3,400 steps each day. 30 days times 3,400 steps comes to 102,000; just over what I'm aiming for...

I need to get started on the rest of today's steps...

.....

I gave started reading an old copy of a Young Adult book by Madelaine l'Engle called 'Prelude'. One of the characters, a woman who was a concert pianist but badly injured her shoulder in a terrible car crash was playing this Gigue in G by Bach, from his French Suites. There was a time when I could just about get through it, but never as well as Andras Schiff here!

It's such a joyous piece.

  1. There are so many decisions to make whenever one makes an addition or any modifications. When we decided to add on to our house I remember getting graph paper and trying out various plans. We needed 2 more bedrooms and a full bath plus a half one. Oh yes, also a laundry room which was to take up half the garage. In the end it all worked out just fine.
I'm sure you're as anxious as can be to see it all happen.
I think I see the cat but it is very well hidden.

    1. We didn't see him at first either.
I'm channelling 'in the end it will be fine' at the moment.

    1. I can't imagine things until it's turned into lines on the ground and piles of bricks!

  3. I love a garden project, since we made our garden flat life is much easier, we just had to get rid of all the different levels caused by decking, path and garage access.

  4. I think I spied the cats eyes? The thought of your building work must be daunting but just think once it is done how great. When we recently had a set room fitted to replace the bathroom I dreaded the thought but it was ok and the workmen were wonderful. It is a dream now and we are so pleased we have had it done, much easier for my Husband. Well done with yourself for two weeks my legs have been very wobbly and I usually manage at least 5000 steps per day as a walk outside but have barely managed a 1000. Yesterday I managed 4853 in a walk it was difficult but I felt so pleased when I collapsed in a heap back home. My covid jab reacted badly and made me feel really poorly hence the wobbly legs, gradually feeling better. I love the Bach Gigue. How wonderful you used to play it. Regards Sue H

    1. A covid vaccination knocks me for six every time... I don't even try and do anything much for at least 2 days afterwards. I must have another look at that gigue... but I know it's a real finger twister

  5. I have had to stop having Covid vaccinations as they make me so unwell. Planning extensions and steps etc takes a lot of energy. Chalking is a Good Idea.

    1. It's always a case of weighing up the risk versus the side effects for covid vaccinations, isn't it.
