Monday 6th October - Moonrise - Sunrise

I see the moon and the moon sees me... that's the first line of a lullaby I used to teach in primary schools. 

I've just been outside to look at the moon tonight, the first of three supermoons before the end of 2025.

Supermoons occur when a full moon coincides with the moon being at its closest point to the Earth (if I've understood that correctly). 

A friend messaged me earlier 'Look at the moon'! She lives just a few streets away, and her house backs onto a field, so she gets the full benefit of seeing the extra large moon close to the ground. It's truly impressive. 

'Look at the moon', called my husband at around seven. Too early; he's a lot taller than me and could see it over the top of the bungalow opposite. I had to wait for quite a while. The skies were clear so it was glowing beautifully and I could see its benign face shining towards me. Beautiful, but not as impressive as if I'd been round at my friend's house. 

I've been measuring the progress of the year by watching the sunrises over the roofs of the bungalows opposite us. During the shortest days, in the middle of December it rises almost exactly opposite us, between a pair of bungalows opposite. In midsummer the sun rises way down towards the far end of the road. Right now it's just a few bungalows away, heading back towards us. 

I'm looking forward to being able to watch the sunrise from my nice warm bed in the mornings. 

Today, sunrise was 7:10, sunset 18:27

moonrise was 18:02, moonset will be 7:32. Or thereabouts; I'm using these tables for the moon and they are complicated compared to sunrise/sunset on my weather app!
