Monday 6th October - Moonrise - Sunrise

I see the moon and the moon sees me... that's the first line of a lullaby I used to teach in primary schools.

I've just been outside to look at the moon tonight, the first of three supermoons before the end of 2025.

Supermoons occur when a full moon coincides with the moon being at its closest point to the Earth (if I've understood that correctly).

A friend messaged me earlier 'Look at the moon'! She lives just a few streets away, and her house backs onto a field, so she gets the full benefit of seeing the extra large moon close to the ground. It's truly impressive.

'Look at the moon', called my husband at around seven. Too early; he's a lot taller than me and could see it over the top of the bungalow opposite. I had to wait for quite a while. The skies were clear so it was glowing beautifully and I could see its benign face shining towards me. Beautiful, but not as impressive as if I'd been round at my friend's house.

I've been measuring the progress of the year by watching the sunrises over the roofs of the bungalows opposite us. During the shortest days, in the middle of December it rises almost exactly opposite us, between a pair of bungalows opposite. In midsummer the sun rises way down towards the far end of the road. Right now it's just a few bungalows away, heading back towards us.

I'm looking forward to being able to watch the sunrise from my nice warm bed in the mornings.

Today, sunrise was 7:10, sunset 18:27

moonrise was 18:02, moonset will be 7:32. Or thereabouts; I'm using these tables for the moon and they are complicated compared to sunrise/sunset on my weather app!

Here's Claire de Lune, Debussy, with Pascal Rogé

I believe the guinea pig is called dindin.

  1. That's a privileged pig!! I watch the progression of the sun as the year advances. My bedroom and living room face east so I see the changes while I'm having my coffee.

    1. You might I suppose catch a glimpse early this morning? If it sets around seven thirty is. I suppose full moon in November and December must be the other 2 this year. But I don't know.

  3. I saw the moon last night. I was watching the clouds through the skylight and they thinned out enough so I could see but tonight it is clear out and I'm hoping for a better view.
Sunrise here was at 7:15 and sunset 6:38, so not so different from yours.

    1. The shorter days just seem to creep up, almost unnoticeable until suddenly you realise that you're closing the curtains so much earlier!

  4. I was just out looking at the supermoon shining round and white in the sky. I, too, notice the different angles of the sun throughout the year.

  5. You've got me interested. I've just checked: the beaver supermoon is 5th November and the cold supermoon is 4th December. I've made a note in my diary!

  6. The moon was magnificent last night. I love guinea pigs our boys had several when they were young, they are clean and charming little characters who make wonderful squeaky sounds. Regards Sue H

    1. Some friends had a whole guinea pig enclosure in their garden similar to the ones you see in children's zoos. It was fun to watch them busying around

  7. We had guinea pig 'runs' which amused our children and their friends. Lovely little animals.

    1. I much prefer them to rabbits. They seem to have more endearing faces
