I've been winter batch cooking. The freezer is full to bursting but it's all that needs cooking, are there have been so many days recently when summoning up the energy to create a meal from scratch has seemed like too much.
The local corner shop has a COOK freezer selling delicious ready-meals - a terrible temptation! But we can't keep succumbing to it's siren call.
Now I have a winter beef casserole to add to a bacon and pepper pasta sauce and I'm feeling a little bit virtuous. I've also made several portions of winter veg and lentil soup for evening meals. Now I'm feeling even more virtuous! The bonus is that all the chopping up of carrots and celery and onion somehow adds to my step count... what a win!

Here are the finished slipper socks. But not on my feet... the yarn was thicker than the one I used before and they are just a bit too big. I gave them to a friend and she says they are a good fit. She sent me this picture, and said I could share it... they are certainly bright. Much easier to find than my old drab ones.
Did anyone, does*** anyone follow the FlyLady? She was/is a cleaning supremo. When I followed her, many years ago, it seemed her mission was to inspire people who were despairing of every getting on top of cleaning and tidying and clearing up their houses. I couldn't keep up and abandoned her checklists and methods. But I do remember her insistence on putting on proper lace up shoes when you get up.
*** see Ang's comment below, I'm clearly quite behind the times regarding Flylady.
If you flop around barefoot or in socks or slippers all day, she said, it's harder to motivate yourself to put out the rubbish, or do any outdoor jobs.
Well, these past few days I've been wearing slippers with proper rubber soles, and yes, it's so much easier to get past the door step and into the garden, even if it's just a yard or two. Maybe I'll hold off getting started on a new pair of slipper socks for now.

FlyLady - Martha Cilley - was one of the first blogs I ever followed. Avoiding CHAOS Syndrome, and Spearing The Great White Whale etc. But in recent years she went a bit weird, and last year her business closed down.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't realised her business had closed. I'll update the post. Thank you
ReplyDeleteThere's a YouTuber, Mr Carrington, that just released a book called Clean in 15. I don't think it's here in the US yet but maybe you all can access from your library if not buy. I need tricks to keep on top of my daily tasks so the more time consuming semi regular aren't do daunting.
ReplyDeleteI must have a look... I'm so useless at sticking to any schedule! Can I make 'learning to stick at something ' into a Lent discipline, I wonder...
DeleteMr Carrington is Iwan on "Sort your life out" with Stacey Solomon
DeleteI haven't watched that programme. Must investigate...
DeleteI followed the Flylady's method for a while but I found that I liked my own ways better. They worked for me. I didn't realize either that she had closed down. I wear slippers in the house too, mostly hard soled so I can quickly go outside and feed the cat etc.. Too bad your slippers turned out to be too big for you.
ReplyDeleteToo bad for me aboutthe slippers, but seemingly good news for my friend! And wearing hard soled slippers is a good idea.
DeleteWell done with all the batch cooking!
ReplyDeleteI wear nice warm, comfy slippers inside. They do have the type of soles that I can pop outside in the warmer months, but wouldn't chance them now - not to mention, I'd probably slip down the back steps in them lol
It's too wet here, it's not ice that's making the paths slippery. A friend gets the run-off from the field behind her house flowing past her door along the path like a river; wellingtons needed to walk up and down the path, which is slick with mud.
DeleteBatch cooking really is the best kind of self-care.
ReplyDeleteAnd those slipper socks are so bright and cheerful.
Thank you 😊
DeleteI used to follow FlyLady in much the same way I enjoy following you and Ang's Sewing Project : with respect and admiration but absolutely no intention of joining in. Love the slipper socks. I now wear slippers with firm soles but still keep a pair of mock Crocs at the door for when I go to the bins. My indoor footwear is strictly for indoors.
ReplyDeleteThat must help to keep the floors clean... takes me back to my school days when we were required to have expensive Clarks or Start-rite indoor and outdoor shoes; at boarding school I needed two pairs of official shoes, one for keeping at school, and one to keep in the boarders house!
DeleteI can't do anything without proper, supportive footwear, just as I cannot attempt anything without being dressed. Perhaps I just cannot relax . . .
ReplyDeleteI do a fair bit of upstairs pottering; putting away laundry, cleaning the bathroom etc in my pjs! My elderly neighbour could be seen still in her dressing gown shaking out her duster from the bedroom window every morning.
DeleteI have days when I do certain jobs and then fit other things in between picking granddaughter up from school, baby minding etc. Batch cooking is always good, I used up all the little packs of mince and made 3 cottage pies.I wear slippers with a hard sole, but keep a pair of crocs by the back door just to slip on when I go to the bins. Xx
ReplyDeleteIt's very satisfying to see the food containers filled and labelled and lined up ready for the freezer 😋
