Saturday 31st October - wild music in the air...

A short clip of Hilary Hahn playing a wild and frenetic passage from the Sibelius violin concerto came up when I was wasting spending a few moments scrolling through YouTube this afternoon.

'That sounds like the perfect music for Halloween', I thought. This clip is half an hour long.... worth every minute in my view.

What else?

Yesterday a young man pulled up in a pantechnicon; 'glass delivery for you' ge announced. He had all the paperwork, with our name and address etc, but all our glass is installed. So he went away. I felt sorry for him as he had driven for two hours from his previous delivery to get here. He seemed very philosophical about it.

The mornings are misty to begin with at the moment. I'm enjoying standing in the bedroom window bay watching the sun slowly burn through. First a pale circle, which steadily brightens until I can't watch any more.

A robin has staked a place on the very top most twig of the ancient flowery cherry outside our bedroom window to sing in the dawn - how perfect is that? The leaves are only just beginning to turn, so I'll be able to watch the colours change a bit more every day.

I've just read that the best way to look after wildlife in the garden is to leave the garden alone... let the leaves stay in a heap somewhere,  just brush the fallen twigs etc into another heap, and let the seed heads stay on the plants in the borders.

Fantastic! I would probably have done all that from laziness anyway! Now as well as conserving energy (mine) I'm doing my bit for the bugs and beasties without any effort.

  1. Many years ago and the first time I saw goldfinches was on Lemon Balm seedheads that I'd not cut back at the end of summer.
Lovely to hear about your Robin dawn song.

  2. My kind of yard work. I'm very partial to the violin after 2 daughters played; youngest still does for her own benefit. Beautiful and eery piece. Loved it.

  3. How odd that there was a delivery of glass for you that you hadn't ordered.
The young fellow probably was paid by the hour and didn't mind the wasted time driving for extra hours.

    1. We were all, as they say, non- plussed. There must be an awful lot of waste.

  4. Great music, wow to be able to play like that. I love that approach to gardening, just my way of doing things and it helps wildlife too. I love to hear the robin sing at this time of year but it makes me feel a little sad as not many other birds sing at this time and we have the winter ahead with the shorter days, roll on spring. 1. We haven't had a lot of birds in the garden this year; too much going om, I suspect. They are beginning to return now.

  5. Someone, somewhere, impatiently awaits a delivery of glass.
Our garden must be an absolute haven for beasties small and large - we're not lazy, just considerate. 😉

    1. Whoever they are, the chances are the glass won't fit their building...
We're a merry bandy of gardening energy conservationists, that's what!
