But generally not until after you have bought and paid for a replacement...
That has happened so many times, including an entire kit comprising socks, hat, thermals, gloves, and goggles for a school skiing trip; bought, lost, bought again and found... thank heavens the ski trousers and jacket were hired by the school so I didn't have to replace them as well!
Here's the poem I was on about yesterday, and used as an excuse to buy a couple of poetry anthologies in order to find it.

It spoke deeply to me the first time I read it, and still does today. The poem is in the 'Poems on the Underground' anthology a bought a month or so ago, that must be why I had a fairly recent nemory of it.
I planned to make the first of Nigel Slater's 'Christmas Potions' as I have been calling them this afternoon. Accordingly I sterilised four jam jars and lids and fetched out the prunes and raisins. Now for the wine; but I had bought Muscadet, a dry white wine, instead of Muscadel, or Muscat, a rich dessert wine. Hey ho, tomorrow is another day. Actually it will have to wait until I can buy the right wine next week sometime.
Twice I have had some eis-wein, or ice-wine, once here in England, bought from Denbies vineyard in Surrey, and once while staying with friends in Canada. It's not so common, and is a special sweet dessert wine made from grapes which have frozen while still on the vine. A little glass of it is delicious if you like sweet dessert wine, especially with Christmas pudding or fruit cake or just as a treat!
A friend from Canada who came to visit bought us a little bottle of eiswein. A special treat [literally 'once in a lifetime'!] 🥂
ReplyDeleteYou never know... by the way, the parcel from your shop arrived today and I am delighted with it. Beautifully made. I'm being secretive about the contents as they are to be Christmas presents and stocking fillers.
DeleteI remember one Christmas long ago - probably about 1978 - my father bought a half bottle of very expensive dessert wine for Christmas, which we drank with the pudding. We all felt very sophisticated!
ReplyDeleteI shall get cheaper dessert wine since I'm adding dried fruit etc to it!
