Wednesday morning is grocery delivery morning, all the on-line shopping I ordered the day before. One of these days I'll sort out my standard list; bread, eggs, extra milk, etc. Until then, well, Wednesday mornings are always full of surprises.
This week I've ordered courgettes twice so I've a glut to deal with. Too many potatoes. The wrong kind of rice. An extra box of eggs. The wrong shaped bread for the toaster. No cold meat.
None of these are 'real' problems. I like eggs.1 I can always make Delia Smith's vegetable rice for lunch. There's always the corner shop, which is - just round the corner, as it happens!
I have to cut the slices of bread in half to make them fit in the toaster, and then catch them with the plastic tongs when they pop, before they disappear back inside - it's quite a fun challenge.
One day, I will surprise myself and my husband by getting a whole week's order just right - this year, next year, some time, or, more likely never!
Music
I've watched this video clip a number of times; I have no idea who these two zephyr are, or how they fit into the opera; it's the curious and slightly weird manner of their entrance, and the way chorus all seem to take a step back and away, as if horrified at their appearance, and then their sudden break out into dance... I'm not sure I've ever listened properly to the music as I'm far too engrossed in the staging!
I am something of a conoisseur of online grocery shopping and have delivery savers for two shops and I've had deliveries from every grocery place that has a van. I try and keep it boring by starting my order on the 'favourites' menu and then tootle around the special offers section, but sometimes stuff just happens and all sorts gets added. Then you add in the 'picker's roulette' and anything could happen. There are some very strange substitutions these days!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, the substitutions! They can be wild!
DeleteOne friend (with wife &4 teenagers) thought he was ordering 24 pints of milk. He actually ordered 24 x 4pint bottles. He ended up giving it away at church!
ReplyDeleteIt's so easy to make those kinds of mistakes... I get deceived by the pictures and forget to check the weight/volunde... and I still have to turn it back into pounds and pints to be sure...
DeleteI love love love your drawings!
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I'm not a fan of doing online shopping in the US. I feel uncomfortable and it costs more. When I was in quarantine in the UK though (back in Covid times) I had orders delivered and it was wonderful. A lot better than trying to carry the shopping back on the bus - especially the heavy stuff!
I think I prefer shopping for myself in person, but that's not really feasible for me. But on-line grocery delivery is still pretty wonderful, even the surprises. I pay for delivery too, but it's similar to car park charges
DeleteWe tend only to order heavy things online, tins, bottles and bulky stuff, all other bits we like to shop ourselves, nothing beats choosing fresh bits ourselves, and we do like to check out the special offers.
ReplyDeleteI love choosing fresh food in person; a rare treat these days.
DeleteDon't worry about the eggs: they last for ages in or out of the fridge. But if you're feeling adventurous you can freeze them - minus the shells obvs - either whole or separated into yolks and whites.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried freezing them; I don't like using old eggs for boiled and scrambled etc but I'll bake with them while they pass the sink or swim test!
DeleteYour bags of shopping look so inviting - what can they contain? The two zephyr are such a strange little pair what is it all about? And those wigs the chorus are wearing must be very uncomfortable and hot. Quite bizarre. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteLoads of stuff! Fish and biscuits and meat and veg... also 10 bottles prosecco, 12 cartons fruit juice, 6 bottles sparkling water, but that's a story for another day!

DeleteI once mistakenly ordered twenty or so bags of lettuce. The driver took them back without comment, so I think such mistakes are quite common. I agree, substitutions can be jaw-dropping.
ReplyDeleteI had an interesting little sojourn into Lully's opera. Atys was known as the King's Opera, because Louis XIV was so fond of it. That's probably the only thing I'll remember about it!
It's very pleasing to know that the music posts are providing so much interest, Thank you.
DeleteWe haven't managed en equivalent to 24 lettuces yet, but now that I'm doing the orders instead of my husband (to lighten his load) it's only a matter of time.
